Mid Backend Developer

This is a backend developer job in Albania, based full time in our Tirana office. Square Software builds custom software, web platforms and mobile apps from Tirana. Our clients are in Albania, in the wider region and in Western Europe. We are hiring one backend developer at mid level. In short, that means you have shipped and maintained backend services in production. You know what goes wrong with them, because you have debugged something at an awkward hour. You have also written a migration that made you nervous. That experience is the whole point of the role. The work is .NET backend services behind real products. We store the data in PostgreSQL, package every service with Docker and operate everything on Kubernetes. Because the team is small, the boundary between writing a service and operating it is genuinely thin. As a result, you will not hand your code to somebody else and stop thinking about it. If you want a narrow ticket queue, with a platform team between you and production, this is not the right role. If you would rather understand the entire journey from a request to a row in the database and back again, then it is.

Design and build backend services in .NET. Most of the work is API and domain logic in C#: endpoints, validation, background jobs and integrations. In other words, the unglamorous correctness that keeps a system trustworthy. Own the data model. You will write the schema and the migrations in PostgreSQL. You will also think about indexes before a table gets large. In particular, you will be the person who notices that a query will not survive the next order of magnitude. Integrate with systems you do not control. For example, a lot of our work touches payment and fiscalization endpoints in Albania. Somebody else sets the rules there, so the error handling matters more than the happy path. Ship and run what you build. We package our services with Docker and deploy them to Kubernetes. You do not need to be an infrastructure specialist. However, you do need to read a manifest, follow a deployment and locate your service logs without asking. Debug production. When something breaks in a live system, you can work from a vague report to a reproducible case. Then you fix it, and you say clearly what happened and why it will not happen again. Review other people's code, especially the work of our juniors. Since we are small, your review is often the only one a change gets. Therefore, treat it as part of the job rather than an interruption to it. Keep an eye on what the system costs. Query time, memory, image size and cloud spend all matter here. In short, a mid-level backend developer notices them instead of escalating them.

Three or more years building backend services in production, with a good part of that in .NET and C#. If your depth is in another typed language such as Java, Go or Kotlin, tell us anyway. We will look, especially if you have used .NET seriously at some point. Real SQL. You can write a join you are not ashamed of, read a query plan and design a schema that survives six months. We use PostgreSQL. Practical Docker. For example, you can write a Dockerfile, explain why an image is too large and debug a container that will not start. Enough Kubernetes to be useful: deployments, services, config maps, secrets and logs. You do not need to run a cluster. However, you should not be lost inside one. REST API design, and the judgment to know when one endpoint is doing too much. Testing you actually do. Unit tests where they pay for themselves, and integration tests around the parts that would hurt if they broke. Albanian and English. Your English should be strong enough to read documentation, write a clear technical explanation and take part in a client call. Based in Tirana, or willing to move there. Experience with fiscalization or e-invoicing, in Albania or anywhere else. We build against those rules often, and the learning curve is real. CI/CD pipelines, and the instinct to automate a manual step the second time you do it. Observability tooling such as Grafana or Prometheus, and an opinion about what is worth alerting on.
